Our message is simple and clear: we want to make decisions about our bodies free from political interference,\u201d said Tori Schafer, attorney for the ACLU and spokeswoman for Missourians for Constitutional Freedom, in a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/news\/local\/government-politics\/missouri-abortion-rights-campaign-submits-signatures-for-constitutional-amendment\/article_aa823644-0959-11ef-916f-7f0d5e923c91.html#tncms-source=login\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> statement to the St. Louis Post Dispatch.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was the third time this week voters seized power from lawmakers and took their rights in their own hands to push for change in the state \u2013 first with the measure to guarantee workers paid sick days and a higher minimum wage, and second with a ballot initiative to allow sports betting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/progressmo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_4793-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-745\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mohealthyfamilies.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Missourians for Healthy Families and Fair Wages<\/a> collected over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/news\/politics-government\/article288200085.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">210,000 signatures by over 1,000 volunteers on the initiative petition<\/a> to provide paid sick days and increase Missouri&#8217;s minimum wage to $15 an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Missourians shared their stories at <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/minimum-wage-missouri-sick-leave-98ac298c0beaa1f294e81de7cb1f81e5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wednesday&#8217;s turn-in at the secretary of state office<\/a> in Jefferson City, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.komu.com\/news\/state\/ballot-initiative-to-raise-minimum-wage-add-paid-sick-leave-hits-secretary-of-states-desk\/article_2c2ba1fa-07cd-11ef-98ca-67d20efc3430.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">moms who want to take care of their kids<\/a> to a <a href=\"https:\/\/missouriindependent.com\/2024\/05\/01\/group-turns-in-signatures-to-put-minimum-wage-hike-paid-sick-leave-on-missouri-ballot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">restaurant worker who worried about spreading illness<\/a> to customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a constant stress, a constant anxiety,\u201d food-service worker Alejandro Gallardo said during the rally. \u201cPeople come into work sick all the time because they have no choice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Missourians voiced their support for improving lives, <a href=\"https:\/\/abc17news.com\/politics\/your-voice-your-vote\/2024\/05\/01\/petitioners-turn-in-signatures-as-lawmakers-try-raise-threshold-to-pass-petitions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">politicians are pushing to silence them<\/a>. With just weeks left in the legislative session, the <a href=\"https:\/\/progressmo.com\/release-april-25-majority-rule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Missouri Senate is considering SJR74<\/a>, which would increase the already-heavy burden on citizens and dismantle majority rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If your friends and neighbors vote a way that you don&#8217;t agree, you need to work to change their hearts and minds and not cut out the needs from democracy from under them,&#8221; said Crystal Buffaloe, a librarian from Columbia who helped collect signatures for the minimum wage petition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallant-mclaren.18-188-198-158.plesk.page\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_4822-908x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-746\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While Missourians mobilize to have their voices heard, politicians continue to work actively against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this week Jefferson City got to see something that\u2019s been missing for too long. <em>The Capitol City got to see what democracy looks like.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome back to Under the Dome, your weekly update on the goings-on of the Missouri state legislature.
