As we reflect on the occasion, how does Missouri measure up on gender equality?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2004 Missouri women have made <a href=\"https:\/\/statusofwomendata.org\/wp-content\/themes\/witsfull\/factsheets\/economics\/factsheet-missouri.pdf\">huge strides in academic and career achievements<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>While in 2004 only 20.3% of Missouri women had <strong>earned a bachelor\u2019s degree or higher, by 2018 that figure rose to 29.4%.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><li>In the same years, <strong>Missouri women employed in managerial or professional positions increased<\/strong> from 35.1% to 40.1%.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But <strong>these achievements haven\u2019t translated into economic outcomes<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>While in 2004 only 11.1% of Missouri women lived in poverty, that figure has <strong>increased to 15.5% compared to men\u2019s 13.3%.<\/strong><\/li><li>As of 2021,<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/regions\/mountain-plains\/news-release\/womensearnings_missouri.htm#:~:text=In%20Missouri%2C%20the%20women%27s%2Dto,the%20states%20began%20in%201997.)\"><strong>Missouri women only make 83% of what Missouri men make<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several ways Missouri could fix the gender wage gap, many of which would also help Missouri men and families. The legislature could address <a href=\"https:\/\/missouriindependent.com\/2023\/04\/26\/missouri-child-care-deserts-now-include-nearly-half-of-kids-5-and-under\/\">Missouri\u2019s child care deserts<\/a>, allowing more women the opportunity to work without worrying about who will take care of their children. And voting in favor of the initiative to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/7-actions-that-could-shrink-the-gender-wage-gap\/\"> raise the minimum wage and provide earned family and sick leave<\/a> will close the gap even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Missouri women are working harder and achieving more than ever before \u2013 isn\u2019t it time their pay reflects that?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This Saturday, August 26, marks the anniversary of the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment as well as Women\u2019s Equality Day.
