Families are worried about providing childcare while working a five-day week, while experts stressed that they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/school-districts-4-day-week-teachers-parents\/\">do not yet know the academic effects<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After legislators in the 2023 session <a href=\"https:\/\/progressmo.com\/2023-mo-legislative-session-recap\/\">refused to mandate five-day school weeks or raise teacher pay<\/a> \u2014 which would help with <a href=\"https:\/\/dese.mo.gov\/media\/pdf\/teacher-shortage-report\">the state\u2019s ongoing teacher shortage<\/a> \u2014 even more Missouri districts moved to four-day weeks for the upcoming school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/resource-library\/educator-pay-and-student-spending-how-does-your-state-rank\">Data from the National Education Association<\/a> puts Missouri\u2019s average starting salary at $34,052 \u2014 dead last in the nation and well below the minimum living wage of $46,944 as determined by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/\">Economic Policy Institute<\/a>. The numbers barely improve when educators actually stay in schools. Average pay is $52,481, placing the Show Me State 47th nationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To compare apples to apples, you can also see that Missouri ranks last when stacked up against the eight surrounding states in both average starting salary and average salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Average Starting Salary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>23. Missouri<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor decades, America\u2019s educators have been chronically underappreciated and shamefully underpaid,\u201d NEA President Becky Pringle said. &#8220;If we want to reverse course and keep qualified teachers in the classroom and caring professionals in schools, then we must increase educator pay across the board and expand access to collective bargaining and union membership for all those working in public education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scarcity of professionals working to provide a brighter future <a href=\"https:\/\/missouriindependent.com\/2023\/07\/13\/new-law-tackles-missouri-teacher-shortage-by-encouraging-retirees-to-return-to-classroom\/\">extends beyond teachers<\/a> to workers like bus drivers, custodians and other essential staff.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this is in addition to constant attacks on the well-being of our students and those educating them. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/teaching-learning\/nearly-300-books-removed-from-schools-under-missouris-sexually-explicit-materials-law\/2022\/11\">legislature has banned nearly 300 books<\/a>, going against Missourians\u2019 steadfast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/feb\/09\/missouri-rejects-ban-children-carrying-guns-in-public\">beliefs in freedom of speech. But they also <\/a>voted against banning toddlers from carrying firearms without adult supervision, going against the wishes of state police. And the government also again inserted itself in people\u2019s personal lives by <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/transgender-nonbinary-hormone-puberty-missouri-lawmakers-5a8922430ffab9e43cf9b7ce254bff9f\">dictating the medical decisions<\/a> of trans students and athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A better future for our state starts with our students. Our elected officials are failing Missourians.
