He also was a socialist and anti-fascist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guthrie is most well known for the song &#8220;This Land Is Your Land,&#8221; which originally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2000\/07\/03\/1076186\/this-land-is-your-land\">critiqued the ownership of private property<\/a> and called out wealth inequality in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Josh Hawley invoked some famous Woody Guthrie lyrics to introduce a bill last week, Guthrie&#8217;s daughter called him out for his phoniness:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Nora Guthrie, Woody\u2019s daughter, said it\u2019s not uncommon for politicians to make use of \u201cThis Land Is Your Land\u201d because the song advocates for democratic representation. She said she didn\u2019t mind the song being used politically, as long as it aligns with the song\u2019s values. <\/p><p>\u201cIn this particular case, the co-opting or parodying of the lyric by those not aligned with Woody\u2019s lyrics &#8211; i.e. misrepresentation by autocrats, racists, white nationalists, anti-labor, insurrectionists, etc. &#8211; is not condoned,\u201d Guthrie wrote in an email. \u201cWe do not consider Josh Hawley in any way a representative of Woody\u2019s values therefore we would never endorse or approve of his reference to Woody\u2019s lyrics.\u201d<\/p><cite>The Kansas City Star, March 13, 2023<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Hawley loves to talk the talk and pretend he stands for working families and Missouri values.
